Education programs granted NCATE accreditation

06-Nov-09

FREDERICK, Md.--Hood College's education department programs were recently accredited by the premier national teacher education accreditation organization.

Hood's accreditation by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education affirms that all six of its teacher preparation programs meet national standards set by the teaching profession following a rigorous, external, impartial review by professional policy makers and the public. Hood's seven-year-long review began in 2002 and was completed this year.

Hood is now one of 667 of the approximately 1,200 colleges and universities offering teacher education programs with NCATE credentials.

NCATE is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation as a professional accrediting body for teacher preparation. Teachers who graduate from NCATE-accredited programs have long been acknowledged by private and local school systems as being prepared for teaching careers and other education-related professions.

Hood's accredited education programs include early childhood, elementary and special education, secondary teacher certification, curriculum and instruction, educational leadership and reading specialization.
