Students and Donors Scholarship Reception
Current students as well as past and present donors will be recognized at an endowed scholarship appreciation reception Sunday, Nov. 9 from 3 to 5 p.m. in Coblentz Dining Room. The countless individuals, organizations and foundations that have given generously to Hood have helped to establish nearly 200 named scholarships that support the education of a majority of Hood’s undergraduate students.
Alumnae and Faculty Member Acknowledged for Research
Christina Woody ’08 and Courtney DeSisto ’08, along with their mentor Ingrid Farreras, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at Hood, were awarded a prestigious Psi Chi National Undergraduate Research Award for the original research they presented at the American Psychological Association convention in Boston, Mass. Their research revealed a significant positive correlation between adolescents’ perception of their parents’ involvement in their lives and their own self-esteem. Hodson Gallery Exhibit
Rex Stevens, chair of the general fine arts and drawing departments at Maryland Institute College of Art where he has taught since 1982, will display his work in Hood’s Hodson Gallery until Saturday, Sept. 27. His exhibit contains images of cultural icons in highly textured collages, made of magazines and newspapers. For more information, please contact Jan Razauskas. Graduate School Information Session
A panel discussion on the specifics of what to consider in selecting and applying to graduate school will be offered by the Career Center Thursday, Sept. 18 from 6:45 to 8 p.m. in Whitaker Campus Center Commons. Ceramics and Painting Workshops Offered
A series of hands-on ceramics and studio art workshops will be offered at Hood during the fall semester.
“Understanding Pottery Glazes” will be offered Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 20-21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Hood’s Hodson Ceramic Studio. The cost for the workshop is $175.
A “Properties of Clay” workshop will also be offered Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 27-28 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. in Hood’s Hodson Ceramic Studio. The fee for participants is $175.
A “Watercolor” course will be offered each Tuesday from Sept. 30 to Oct. 18 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The fee for the workshop is $115.
An “Arts Management” course will be offered Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 27-28, Oct. 18-19, and Nov. 1-2, and Sunday, Dec. 7 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Hood’s Tatem Arts Center. The cost of the course is $700.

The Poulenc Trio in Concert
The Poulenc Trio, comprised of oboist Vladimir Lande, bassoonist Bryan Young and pianist Irina Lande, will perform works by Handel, Glinka, Rossini, Poulenc, Previn and Piazzolla Tuesday, Sept. 23 in Hood’s Brodbeck Music Hall at 8 p.m. The program, which is free and open to the public, will feature classical and contemporary chamber music. Award-winning Filmmaker Visits Campus
Award-winning environmental filmmaker John Grabowska will give a lecture on the ecology of sand barrier islands off the mid-Atlantic coast and show his documentary “Ribbon of Sand” Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. in Hood’s Hodson Auditorium in Rosenstock Hall. The documentary focuses on the Cape Lookout National Seashore, a 60-mile stretch of beach, marsh and forest on North Carolina’s Outer Banks and one of the few remaining natural barrier island systems in the world. The event is sponsored by Hood’s Coastal Studies Program and The Society for Ocean Sciences. U.S. Policy in the Middle East Lecture and Book Signing
Trita Parsi, Ph.D., a noted author and expert on U.S. policy in the Middle East, will give a lecture and hold a book signing Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. in Hood’s Whitaker Campus Center Commons. Parsi will discuss his book, “Treacherous Alliance: The Secret Dealings of Iran, Israel and the United States,” which is the first book since 1987 to directly address Israeli-Iranian relations and their impact on U.S. national interests and the only book based on extensive interviews with decision-makers from all three countries. "Envisioning Women in World History" Lecture
Pamela McVay, associate professor of history and chair of the department at Ursuline College in Ohio, will give a lecture titled “Envisioning Women in World History 1500 to the Present” Thursday, Sept. 25 at 3:30 p.m. in Hood’s Marx Center. Her talk, based on her book of the same title, will focus on how major world historical events shaped and changed women’s lives and how women have influenced history. Colloquium Series Begins With Poetry Readings
Poets David Salner, noted for his poetry depicting working class life, and Hope Maxwell-Snyder, who has been celebrated for her humorous and insightful poetry, will present their work, and hold readings and book signings Thursday, Sept. 25 at 5 p.m. in Hood’s Beneficial-Hodson Library and Technology Center. A reception for the authors will precede their presentations at 4:30 p.m. The event is part of the College’s annual colloquium lecture series, which this year focuses on understanding cultural differences. 6th Annual Into the Light Conference
The 6th annual Into the Light Conference on domestic violence prevention will take place at Hood Wednesday, Oct. 1 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and will focus on domestic violence policies, theories and laws. The keynote speaker will be Yvette Cade, who has appeared on “Oprah,” “Nancy Grace” and “The Montel Williams Show.” She will describe her life as a survivor of perhaps the most horrific domestic violence case in Maryland. Several breakout sessions will be available throughout the day. The conference will end with a panel of experts who will discuss their theories on why Maryland had more domestic violence homicides this year than ever before and what we as a society can do to stop domestic violence. The conference is free and open to the public and lunch will be provided. Science in the Cinema Series Continues with "Chocolat"
The Oscar- and Golden Globe-nominated film “Chocolat,” featuring Juliette Binoche, Judi Dench and Johnny Depp, will be shown Monday, Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. in Hood’s Whitaker Campus Center Commons. The film will be followed by an informal talk about the science of chocolate by two scientists from The Hershey Company. Light snacks will be served and the Blazer snack bar will be open until 11 p.m. for additional food purchases. "Rock the Vote" Event Part of Social Visionary Speakers Series
Political and pop culture commentator Jehmu Greene will visit campus as part of Hood’s Social Visionary Speakers Series to give a lecture titled “Rock the Vote: If You Don’t Vote, Don’t Complain … Get Involved! Senior Nick Manning (above) led Hood at Saturday’s Wilmington Invitational, clocking a 33:53 to place 56th of 111 runners. Blair Ames finished close behind Manning for 59th-place. Ames was followed by Mattia Mabellini (63rd), Brendan Greenlees (68th) and Ben Caplins (93rd). The Blazers' next meet is slated for Saturday at York College (Pa.).

Hood won its first game of the season Saturday, blanking the College of Notre Dame (Md.) 4-0 at Thomas Athletic Field. The triumph over the Gators marked the first for head coach Staci Brennan over CND in her seven-year coaching career. It was also Hood's second win in 15 all-time meetings with its former Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference foes and first since the 1999 season. Freshman Maria Smith (above) scored two goals for Hood—the first tallies of her career. Brandy Noel also notched two goals and had one assist to Smith. Jen Lacy recorded six saves for Hood (1-2, 0-1 CAC). The Blazers will travel to Cedar Crest College Saturday for a nonconference matchup.

In its first outing of the fall season, Hood’s men’s golf team placed 11th out of 11 teams at the Penn State University-Harrisburg Invitational Monday. Sophomore Evan Chaney (above) had a career-best performance, finishing with a score of 83 (+11). Andy Alger followed Chaney with an 89, while Daniel Reid and Bob Ranft scored a 101 and 110, respectively. Hood’s next match is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 18 against Stevenson University, formerly Villa Julie College, in Hampstead, Md.

The Blazers finished a busy week with a pair of wins and one loss, evening their overall record at 3-3. On Monday, the Blazers recorded their first shutout of the season, 4-0, against Valley Forge Christian College at the Germantown (Md.) SoccerPlex. Quinn Miller, Jon Butterfield, Matthew Dybala and Jacob Ausherman scored for Hood while Miller and Christopher Mendez (above) each had an assist. The Blazers then downed Mt. Aloysius, 5-0, on the road Thursday. Mendez, Carlin Rabie, Tom Sprague, Corey DeMaster and Matt Sharp all scored their first goals of the season. Finally, Hood dropped a 2-0 decision to Waynesburg Saturday. Shawn Fernholz had five saves in goal for Hood. The Blazers return to action Wednesday, Sept. 17, at Randolph College.

The Blazers are still looking for their first win of the season after opening their Capital Athletic Conference schedule Tuesday with a 3-0 (3-25, 10-25, 18-25) loss at Wesley College. Kristina Straub led the Blazers with a team-high six kills and six assists. On Saturday Hood traveled to Washington, D.C., for the Catholic University Tournament. In its first match of the tournament, Hood fell 3-1 to Catholic in four sets (14-25, 26-24, 18-25, 13-25). In the second match, Messiah College defeated the Blazers (8-25, 24-26, 15-25). Chelsea Weaver (above) and Hood return to Gambrill Gymnasium this week for a pair of matches. The Blazers host Penn State University-Harrisburg Tuesday and CAC rival St. Mary's College (Md.) Friday.
