Corporations and Foundations

Since its founding in 1893, Hood College has been fortunate to have developed many strong relationships with businesses and foundations in Maryland and throughout the United States. The Hodson Trust, Hood's largest benefactor, has contributed more than $30 million to Hood over the past 16 years. But Hood is equally grateful for the support of hundreds of other foundations and businesses, including members of the Fortune 500 as well as small, local establishments in our hometown of Frederick, Md.

Corporations and foundations fund many of the same programs that interest our individual donors, such as scholarships, building construction and maintenance, special academic projects and classroom support, research studies and internship stipends.

Presidential Leadership Scholarships

The Hood College Board of Associates established the Presidential Leadership Scholarship program in 1986 to solicit gifts from the greater Frederick business community in support of student scholarships. Today, through the PLS program, scholarships of up to $3,000 a year are targeted primarily to students who transfer to Hood College after two years at an area community college.

Endowed Scholarships

Scholarships such those established by Allegheny Energy and the James M. Johnston Trust provide funds for scholarships in perpetuity. The farsighted organizations that create endowed funds realize their communities are strengthened when educational opportunities are provided to deserving students. Organizations that establish endowed scholarships may specify criteria for making scholarship awards, ensuring that their areas of interest are met. Please contact the Office of Institutional Advancement at (301) 696-3700 to learn more about creating an endowed scholarship.

Support of New Buildings/Naming Opportunities

In recent years, Hood has built several important new buildings, including the Hodson Science and Technology Center, the Beneficial-Hodson Library and Information Technology Center and the Whitaker Campus Center. The renovation of Shriner Hall was completed in July 2002 and future building renovations will include the landmark Brodbeck Music Hall and Meyran Hall. Naming a room in a Hood building (including the Hodson Science Center and Shriner Hall) is an excellent way to support an area of interest at Hood while receiving extensive local media exposure and forging a strong partnership with Hood College.

Matching Gifts

Many organizations support Hood by matching gifts made to the College by their employees. To discuss adding your company to this list, contact Tammy Smith in Hood's Advancement Services department at (301) 696-3704.
