Total Enrollment

In fall 2007, total enrollment was 2,522 students: 1,448 undergraduates, and 1,074 students seeking master’s degrees, certificates or certifications.

Distinguished Faculty

Approximately 100 dedicated professors ensure a low student-to-teacher ratio that ensures personal and high-quality attention. There are 81 full-time faculty—most of whom hold the doctorate—who get to know the special strengths of each student.

Student-to-Faculty Ratios

Student-to-faculty ratios are 15:1 undergraduate; 16:1 graduate.

Facilities and Housing

Academic facilities include an outstanding library and information center, advanced computing laboratories, a child education laboratory, an observatory and state-of-the-art science and language laboratories. A student center and five stately residence halls and three language residences give students the chance to learn together and create friendships that last a lifetime.

Hood recently expanded and renovated its Hodson Science Hall. The new $20 million Hodson Science and Technology Center houses programs in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, environmental studies, physics, mathematics and computer science. New and expanded classroom and laboratory areas allow students to integrate the laboratory and lecture components of their work while permitting the faculty to include students, at all levels, in scientific research.

Successful Graduates

From the boardroom of IBM and the newsrooms of NBC to the chamber of the U.S. Senate to the medical staff of the Mayo Clinic, Hood graduates have excelled in the fields they've chosen. Today, more than 16,000 graduates live in 50 states and the District of Columbia, two territories and 56 countries. Nearly one-third reside in Maryland.

Extracurricular Life

Even though Hood's academic programs are rigorous, there's always time for socializing through more than 50 clubs and organizations and 16 honor societies. Popular events include Spring Arts Weekend, the Margaret Hood Semi-formal, Freshman Bash, Fall Family Weekend, Messiah and current and classical movie showings.

NCAA Athletics

"Go Blazers!" is the cheer that rings across the campus when Hood faces opponents in 19 men's and women's sports: basketball, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, tennis, track and field and volleyball. Hood competes as a Division III, NCAA institution highly competitive Capital Athletic Conference.

Admission Deadlines and Requirements

Under Hoods Early Actions Process, freshman applicants who submit their applications for review by Sept. 1, Oct. 1, Nov. 1 or Dec. 1, will receive an admission decision in as early as two weeks. Hood's Rapid Review process allows freshman applicants to submit their applications at the first of each month, February through August, with an admissions decision by the middle of each month. Transfer students are encouraged to apply early because early application and acceptance allows early registration. The transfer program adheres to a rolling admissions policy; there are no deadlines for transfer applications. For more information, please call the Adult and Transfer Office at (800) 922-1599. Applicants should show evidence of strong academic preparation through their grade point average and SAT or ACT scores. Graduate students need a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and a 2.5 grade point average or higher, depending on program of study. Certain graduate courses of study require the successful completion of certain undergraduate courses.

Affordable Tuition Rates

Click here to see how affordable Hood is compared to other colleges. Undergraduate tuition for 2007-2008 is $25,076. Room and board is $8,542. Graduate tuition is $360 per credit.

Available Scholarships and Financial Aid

One Hood student in five receives an honors scholarship and almost 100 percent of undergraduates receive some form of financial aid. In addition, grant, loan and work opportunities are available to qualified students.

Economic Impact

Hood College contributes—directly and indirectly—more than $85 million annually to the Frederick economy. Hood faculty and staff administer approximately 100 internship sites in the region each year. Hundreds of students, faculty and staff volunteer in the region annually.
